Weekly College Update

Dear Senior Thunderbirds, Huskies, Snow Leopards, and Bulldogs,

At Summit this week and at high schools all across the country, we are celebrating National College Signing Day! College Signing Day is a newer tradition that First Lady Michelle Obama is helping to promote. In her words,“If we want to truly lead the world again in terms of young people with a college degree, we should celebrate students going to college the same way we celebrate athletes and celebrities. Education should be that important for every single person in this country.”

This week’s focus is College Signing Day.

College Signing Day is a celebration, but it also marks a very important deadline in the college application process. May 1st is the deadline for students to choose their college and sign their “SIR” (Statement of Intent to Enroll) or Enrollment Confirmation at most 4 year colleges and universities across the country. When students accept their offer of admission, there is often an enrollment fee that goes with it, anywhere from $100 and up. In addition, May 1 or soon after may be the deadline to accept gift aid (grants and scholarships) from the university, sign up for an orientation session, and make a housing deposit.

Each school has a unique policy, so be sure to read your portals very carefully and don’t hesitate to call the admissions office if you have questions. You can read more about campus-specific CSU registration policies here and the UC policy here.

Please note that you should only accept an offer of admission from ONE college. You risk getting your offer revoked if you accept multiple offers, and you will forfeit your registration fee if you don’t actually attend the school.

Good luck as you finalize your decisions and congratulations on your college commitments!
